Joy, to the World

A young Dumplin’ meets Melissa in this joyful and energetic middle grade novel about a twelve-year-old girl living her life to the fullest, celebrating her love for sports and fighting for her right to cheer.

Joy, a twelve-year-old trans girl, just moved to Texas with her mother and older brother. Her family has accepted Joy as the girl she is early in her transition, with little fuss, leaving Joy to explore her love of sports, competition, teamwork, school spirit, and worship.

But when she is told she’s off the cheerleading team, Joy wants to fight for her right to cheer. As her battle with the school board picks up momentum, Joy attracts support from kids all around the country . . . she even gets the attention of her hero, trans activist Kai Shappley.

Inspired by Kai’s own life, Joy, to the World is a timely story of living life to the fullest, celebrating and centering trans joy, courage, and resilience.

Editor’s note: Amid a charged national conversation about transgender rights, the question of how best to love, support, and care for trans-identifying young Americans has become a source of fervent debate. In recent months, as a wave of legislation and orders has emerged from conservative statehouses designed to block gender-affirming medical treatment for young people, Vogue sent the photographer Ethan James Green and writer Devan Díaz to Texas to meet a girl already very much in the public eye. The following text, images, and video documentary are the result. Every young person’s story is different, and Vogue urges readers and parents to consult resources as varied as the Human Rights Campaign, the American Medical Association, PFLAG, Gender Spectrum, the Trevor Project, and others when seeking support and care. Anyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, can support the LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning) community. But being an ally of this population takes action. Allies work to stay informed on current LGBT issues and events. They speak up for what’s right and they support equality by fighting for policies that protect LGBTQ individuals from discrimination. Allies are important and welcomed supporters of the LGBTQ movement, as they have one of the most powerful, influential voices. They help create a platform for activism to fight homophobia and transphobia, and they personally advocate for equal treatment for all people, regardless of their sexual orientation. Read full Post

Parenting isn't always easy — especially if your child is lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or questioning (LGBTQ). In many ways no different from their peers, LGBTQ youth face some unique challenges that parents often feel unprepared to tackle. To help, Johns Hopkins pediatrician and adolescent medicine specialist Errol Fields shares steps you can take to keep your child happy and healthy. Let them know they are loved. For many LGBTQ youth, breaking the news to mom and dad is the scariest part of coming out. “Time and time again, we hear the same thing from patients: ‘Once my parents are behind me, I can handle anything else the world throws at me,’” Dr. Fields explains. “You’re their anchor, and your acceptance is key. In fact, research shows that LGBTQ adolescents who are supported by their families grow up to be happier and healthier adults.” Read full Post

In our ever-evolving society, understanding LGBTQ+ terminology and identities is important for promoting an inclusive and respectful environment. Whether you are a part of an LGBTQ+ community, an ally, or simply looking to learn how to be a supportive friend or family member, educating yourself and others is essential. This comprehensive guide provides ten detailed tips to help you navigate and understand the vast spectrum of this topic. As a result, you’ll be well-equipped to create a welcoming space for all. 1. Start with the Basics: Understanding the basics is the first step in learning about LGBTQ+ terminology and identities. The acronym stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer/Questioning, with the ‘+’ representing many other sexual orientations, gender identities, and expressions (such as Intersex, Asexual, and Two-Spirit). Take time to learn about terms like ‘pansexual,’ referring to attraction regardless of gender, and ‘bisexual,’ meaning attraction to both the same and different genders. For instance, the website “GLAAD’s Tips for Allies of Transgender People” is a fantastic resource to begin with. It provides clear and concise explanations of many of these terms. Read full Post

What People Are Saying

What people are saying about the this beautiful book "JOY, TO THE WORLD" written by Kai Shappley & Lisa Bunker.

This is an inspiring story about Joy, of course, but really about the power of being your true authentic self, and the beauty that lies within fighting for yourself and for others. I would encourage every kid and their parents to dive into this beautiful book.

Megan Rapinoe
Athlete Activist

"At a time when media and society focus sharply on dividing us, this story reminds us of a universal truth: we are all more alike than we are different. “Joy, to the World” is a page-turner for audiences of all ages and is sure to inspire every reader to fight for their own rights and the rights of their friends".

Chris Mosier
Trailblazing Transgender Athlete

"It’s said that “readers are leaders,” but we must remember that writers are as well. Kai and Lisa are leading us all to love more as we listen and learn to the voices and lived experiences of trans students. May we all learn to be ourselves, tell our stories, and fight for others. Read this book, y’all!"

Jed Dearybury
Educator, Author, Illustrator

“Both heart warming and heart wrenching, this book truly captures a glimpse into the powers of Ms Kai Shappley. If the Dolly Parton references didn’t hook you, this story of Joy will. A love letter to all who choose to read it, I am excited to share this book with the world at large!”
